As opposed to coffee, which used to be my vice of choice. Espresso, latte, cappuccino, even the sneaky moccha once in a while… you name it, I drank it. In excess. In a steady supply from 6 am till 11 pm (probably because otherwise, I’d fall asleep every time I sat down). With the transition to SCD/low FODMAP, coffee had to go away. We shall not talk about the caffeine withdrawal I went through on top of the usual SCD intro symptoms. EVER. Now that I dispensed with the SCD part of my diet, I could go back to drinking espresso which is low in FODMAPs, but I hesitate to fall back into the clutches of the habit. So, the fact remains that lack of coffee left a large gap in my lifestyle.

So did lack of herbal teas, for that matter. I used to drink litres (and I mean this in the literal sense) of chocolate, vanilla and apple spice tea every day, unknowingly pumping myself full of inulin, fructose and FOS. To add insult to injury, I adopted the British habit of drinking tea with milk – soy, in my case. All in all, a FODMAP torpedo. Can you see the problem I have now? I happen to detest mint and am not sophisticated enough for savoury herbal teas…

As luck would have it, during one of my bi-weekly runs through the produce stand I spotted large bunches of fresh lemongrass and remembered how much I enojyed a lemnograss blend in a small teahouse I found on one of the back streets of Edinburough. I decided to give it a go, and was not disappointed! The tea is mellow, a little sweet all on its own and very refreshing. As far as I’m aware, lemongrass is considered low FODMAP, perhaps because it is traditionally consumed in small quantities. Like with everything else, use your best judgement; I’ve never had any trouble with it.

Another low FODMAP tea option I use and probably abuse is ginger tea. We’re not talking powdered ginger here; I mean the root, peeled and chopped, and then either frozen or dehydrated. Zingy, spicy and comforting.

In fact, making tea is the second most important use for my dehydrator (backpacking food is the first one). I simply bag them up with a little silica gel sachet and scatter the bags around my usual haunts (such as work).

Then, there is obviously the black, green and white tea. I try to limit these to two cups per day; one cup of loose leaf Earl Gray in the morning, and a cup of a black tea after lunch. Sometimes, I’ll swap the black for green, but that is as far as my adventures go. Almond milk curdles in tea and rice milk is too sweet, so this curbs my inner Brit.

On cold days, I brew a rather decadent black tea with winter spices. Together with the tea leaves, I add a small piece of cinnamon bark, two or three cloves and a cardamom seed to the little ball wire infuser I put in the cup. Sometimes, I’ll also throw in a splash of vanilla essence. This certainly tastes better with milk, so if you’re lucky enough to tolerate dairy, go ahead and indulge in some creamy goodness! Alternatively, try coconut milk – I must test that myself.

Now that I’m following the low FODMAP diet alone, I will certainly experiment with store-bought brands… updates to come!

    I too was a coffee junkie and switched to a couple cups of caffeine then switch to decaf green tea.
    I always thought British black teas were the strongest, that is, until I tried America’s Breakfast Blend”.(Bigelow brand, and no, this is not a paid ad.) It is something to look forward to wake up to. I still do not do mornings well, and this stuff is awesome. It gives me a kick, but not in my belly or below it. LOL :-)

      You are so right about Bigelow’s American Breakfast blend. I am not a paid ad either, just a former coffee junkie. I have tried the British blend breakfast teas, both loose and bagged, and the American Breakfast does give me a kick, and as a IBS person, may I add, not in my BUTT! LOL!
      I do grow my own Lemongrass and will also this summer go to my hibiscus hedge and gather some of the blossoms, maybe with some dehydrated orange rind to “jazz” it up. Yep I am an “Old Hippy”, or should I say a “Groovy Granny”! :)
